Velour Fabric Construction and Pile Properties

Velour is a weft-knitted fabric with a cut-pile surface on one side, produced by shearing or cutting the loops after the base fabric is knitted. The cut-pile construction gives velour its characteristic surface sheen and directional nap. This differentiates it from traditional woven velvet, while still offering a similar soft pile effect with better stretch and garment flexibility. The knitted base provides inherent stretch and recovery, making velour well-suited for fitted garments and active applications where woven pile fabrics would restrict movement.

Fiber Options and GSM Range

Runtang supplies velour fabric across a 150–600gsm weight range. Lighter constructions in the 150–250gsm range are suited for casual wear and base layers. Mid-weight options (250–400gsm) are the most common for tracksuits and loungewear. Heavier constructions above 400gsm provide added body for outerwear and structured styles.

Fiber compositions available include 100% cotton, polyester-spandex, cotton-spandex, and cotton-polyester blends. Spandex content typically ranges from 5–20% depending on the required stretch and recovery specification.

Performance Properties for Apparel Production

    • Stretch and recovery: The knitted base construction provides bi-directional stretch, supporting pattern efficiency in cut-and-sew operations.
    • Pile durability: Cut-pile surfaces maintain appearance through repeated washing when production-standard finishing is applied.
      • Comfort: Velour's velvety surface offers comfort and warmth, making it a cozy choice for cool weather.
    • Drapability: Heavier gsm constructions exhibit structured drape suitable for outerwear; lighter weights offer fluid drape for casual and loungewear applications.
    • Insulation: The dense pile layer contributes to warmth retention, relevant for autumn/winter collections and active outerwear.

Apparel Applications

Velour fabric's softness and elegance make it suitable for a variety of stylish and comfortable apparel, including:

  • Tracksuits

Velour tracksuits and athleisure wear combine comfort with a touch of glamour.

  • Dresses and Gowns

Velour dresses and evening gowns offer a luxurious look and a soft feel.

  • Loungewear

Velour loungewear, including hoodies, joggers, and pajamas, provides a cozy option for relaxation.

  • Outerwear

Velour coats and jackets add a layer of warmth and sophistication to outerwear.

Knitting Process of Velour Fabric

Velour fabric production begins with knitting a base fabric using a weft-knitting machine. Loop pile is formed on one face of the fabric during knitting. The pile loops are then sheared or cut uniformly to produce the characteristic cut-pile surface. Post-knitting processes include dyeing, anti-pilling treatment where specified, and softening finishes. Runtang handles dyeing and finishing in-house, supporting color consistency across bulk production runs.
