Product Fabric

Construction and Stitch Structure

Purl knit fabric is produced by combining knit and purl stitches to create a textured surface with raised stitch definition. Depending on the construction, the reverse side may appear smoother or may be developed as a usable face for specific designs. Pattern scale, yarn count, machine gauge, stitch density, and finishing method should be confirmed during sample development.

Fiber Composition and GSM Options

Runtang supplies purl knit fabric in 100% wool, wool-acrylic blends, cotton, cotton-polyester blends, and acrylic. Common weights range from 150–500 GSM, with 220–320 GSM often used for balanced texture, drape, and bulk. Fiber selection affects stretch recovery, weight, dyeing behavior, hand feel, and dimensional stability. Samples across selected compositions are available on request.

Technical Properties

    • Reversibility: Some purl knit constructions can show texture on both sides, but the usable face should be confirmed by a sample.
    • Stretch and recovery: Natural stretch comes from the knit structure, while recovery depends on yarn type, stitch density, and spandex content.
    • Thermal performance: The raised texture may help retain air, but warmth still depends on fiber composition, GSM, density, and finishing.
    • Dimensional stability: Heavier wool blends provide more body, while lighter cotton blends offer softer drape. Shrinkage and width stability should be checked before bulk production.

Apparel Applications

Purl knit fabric's texture and warmth make it suitable for a variety of cozy and stylish apparel, including:

  • Sweaters and Cardigans

Purl knit sweaters and cardigans offer a textured and warm layer for cooler weather.

  • Scarves and Beanies

Purl knit scarves and beanies provide a cozy accessory for both casual and outdoor wear.

  • Dresses and Skirts

Purl knit fabric dresses and skirts create a comfortable and textured look.

  • Blankets and Throws

The fabric is used for blankets and throws, adding warmth and texture to home textiles.

  • Accessories

Purl knit fabric can be used for gloves, mittens, and other accessories, offering both style and comfort.

Knitting Process

Yarn is fed into a flat-bed or circular knitting machine configured with alternating needle settings. The machine cycles between knit and purl positions, building up the raised-surface structure row by row. After knitting, the greige fabric may go through relaxing, washing, steaming, blocking, softening, or heat-setting where applicable. Dyeing can be arranged at the yarn or fabric stage depending on fiber composition, color requirements, and order volume. Final inspection should check width, GSM, shrinkage, surface texture, and color consistency.
