Construction and Knitting Structure

Pique knit fabric is produced on circular knitting machines using knit, tuck, and sometimes miss-stitch structures to create a raised textured surface. Common surface effects include honeycomb, bird's eye, and geometric pique patterns. This construction gives the fabric a stable hand feel, breathable texture, and repeatable surface structure for branded apparel programs.

Fiber Composition and Weight Options

Standard fiber options include 100% cotton, cotton/polyester blends, 100% polyester, and polyester/spandex combinations. Cotton constructions are commonly specified for polo shirts and casual wear requiring breathability and natural hand-feel. Polyester and polyester-blend constructions are often used for sportswear and uniform programs where durability, faster drying, and optional moisture-wicking finishes are required. The weight range runs from 150 GSM for lightweight polo knit to 300 GSM for heavier structured variants. Custom blends and weights are available from the sampling stage.

Technical Properties

    • Dimensional stability: The tuck-stitch construction minimizes distortion across the fabric face, supporting consistent print and embroidery registration.
    • Moisture management: The raised surface structure creates air channels that support ventilation and wicking in active or warm-weather end uses.
    • Durability: Pilling resistance, surface retention, and wash performance depend on yarn quality, fiber blend, and finishing process. Polyester-blend pique options are often selected when brands need better durability for uniforms or sportswear programs.
    • Color consistency: Cotton pique is typically dyed with reactive dyeing, while polyester pique uses disperse dyeing. Dyeing and finishing should be selected according to fiber composition to support even color, shade matching, and bulk consistency.

Apparel Applications

Pique knit fabric's distinctive texture and classic appeal make it suitable for a range of apparel, including:

  • Polo Shirts

The classic pique polo shirt is a staple of casual and sporty fashion, with the textured pattern adding a touch of sophistication.

  • Dresses and Skirts

Pique fabric can be used to create elegant dresses and skirts that stand out with their unique texture.

  • Jackets and Blazers

Pique blazers or jackets can add a refined texture to formal and semi-formal outfits.

  • Accessories

Pique fabric is also used for accessories like handbags, hats, and scarves, adding texture and style.

Knitting Process of Pique Knit Fabric

Pique is produced on circular knitting machines using a combination of knit and tuck stitches. The tuck stitch holds a loop without forming a new stitch, creating the raised surface geometry at programmed intervals. Needle bed configuration and stitch repeat determine the final pattern — honeycomb, two-bar pique, eyelet, and mesh-pique are among the standard constructions. After knitting, fabric is scoured, dyed, and finished to customer specifications. Anti-shrink and softening treatments are available depending on end-use requirements.
